Fun Facts About The Two Holidays!
Wanna wish my American Friends a Happy Columbus Day and my Canadian Friends Happy Turkey Day!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_%28Canada%29
1. second Monday in October (observed in the United States)
2. Celebrations honoring Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas in 1492
3. President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of the event.(Pres. Harrrison is suppose to be a relative of mine as are both Adams, haven't found the connection yet but still searching.)
 4.  Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, and South Dakota are U.S. states that do not recognize Columbus Day at all, though Hawaii and South Dakota mark the day with an alternative holiday or observance.
5.  The most common name for the celebration in Spanish (including in some Latin American communities[32] in the United States) is the Día de la Raza ("day of the race" or "day of the [hispanic] people"), commemorating the first encounters of Europeans and Native Americans.
6.  Since 1994, Costa Rica had changed the official holiday from Día de la Raza to Día de las Culturas (Day of the cultures) to recognize the mix of European, American, African and Asian cultures that helped to compose Costa Rican (and Latin American) culture.
7.  Some Caribbean countries also observe holidays related to Columbus Day. In Belize, October 12 is celebrated as Day of the Americas or Pan-American Day. In the Bahamas, it is known as Discovery Day, and is also celebrated on October 12.
8.  Since 1987, Spain has celebrated the anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the Americas as its Fiesta Nacional or "National Day".
9.  Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l'Action de grâce), occurring on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday which celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year.
10. In any case, a festive meal with turkey and all the trimmings is customary. Thanksgiving in Canada is also often a time for weekend getaways.

IN OTHER NEWS.....
The rains came and dropped another 2" on us. So yes, more water is built up and no shipping cows on Tues. But maybe we can see a light at the end of the tunnel and can ship cows on Sunday 20th and maybe next Tues 22nd or Wed 23rd. One can Pray!!!
Yesterday I had a hankerin' for some good ol' Spanish Food. Well American Spanish anyhow so I decided since we were dripping, yes, dripping wet from moving cows out of the windmill pasture which mind you was full of water! They were standing in at least 3" of water in the shallowest spot. But they were finding grass to eat. We had to move them as the weather was calling for deep snow and didn't want them to get caught in a bad storm with no shelter to get in. The field we moved them into has a long barn on it although we did find one calf that didn't make it through the last storm we are hopeful that these others will make it through until they are sold.
But on to the fooooooddddd, I made Taco Soup with Tortilla Chips on The side and honestly I looked around the net to find a recipe but ended up making this one myself.

RECIPE:

2 lbs ground meat
1 large onion
1 packet of taco seasoning
1-30 oz can chili beans
1-4 oz can of med. chili peppers
1-15 oz can of corn w/juice-don't drain!
1 pint of salsa- mine was home made- the thicker/meater the better!
Bag of tortilla chips

Cook the meat, onion and seasoning together until cooked thru then add the rest of the ingredients. Cook for 30 mins. Serve with Chips on the side.
Here at our house the chips get used like spoons! This is a warm you up from the inside out kind of soup/stew.
