This is always an exciting and exhausting time of the year. Prepping for winter!  Today we received a bushel of corn which was promptly put up in the freezer. Thanks folks! Added to this we put up a quarter bushel of corn from our garden, 5quarts of the last of the beans, 3gallon bags of squash for the freezer and 12 quarts of the last potatoes(finishing them up now). All that is left are the bucket(5gal) of apples...tomorrow! Now we wait for the fall garden to grow.... so far the buttercrunch and some beans are showing. Left of spring garden, tomatoes, watermelon, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, peppers and cabbage. Everything else has been pulled! Weekend Updates

Image
Went to a family reunion this weekend and had a blast!!  It has been since 2006 since I have been around family except maybe my sister which was about 2009?? We had fun!! Went to Tennessee and went boating on the Kentucky Lake.... had a nice time. This part of the family I hadn't seen some in 20 yrs and others in 30+ yrs.....  We picked in the garden today and wow what a bounty. Canned up 11 quarts of tomatoes, would have had 12 but one jar didn't make it. Pulled the corn and the rest of the beans... will can them in the next couple days. Went to the doc today for Mtn Man's knee .... a steroid shot was applied and 4 more weeks of therapy! Ugghh ... not a happy man! Time will tell...... Have a great week everybody! Goat Tractor

Image
Couple hours and Mtn Man built a goat tractor!! Great use for the dog kennel that didn't get used all that much by the dogs. Added the runner (where the 2x8 will sit) before he put it together using a hole bit for the opening where the rails will sit ta ' da ' Notice the angle cuts on the ends ( sled part of the boards ) so it will slide easy Bracket over the top of rail so it won't pop out added corners for bracing but doubles for shelves to hold water buckets ( see below) Drilled holes for chain to pull the tractor And it's off for the first run.. notice we put tarps for shade on top They weren't sure what to think I walked beside them reassuring them parked them in some lush weeds... Happy Goats! Results : We moved them a few more times before dark and am fixin to head out to move them this morning. They are down by the creek eating the weeds that grow there. I suspe...

Canning Mtn Man

Image
18 quarts yesterday... 3 mix (beans & potatoes) the rest potatoes.... so many to go! That is about half of that cooler..... will do more later. Today we build a "goat tractor" and freeze some goodies. Didn't get the potatoes planted but will today for sure can't doddle on that deal to little time left. Correction on the planting... Mtn Man informed me we missed our window of opportunity according to the Farmer's Almanac so have to wait until Thurs/Fri to plant. Update on Mtn Man: It has come to my attention that bloggers are curious on how he is doing. Well this is his last week of therapy!! Yeah! Two more days and a doc appt on Monday the 28th will tell us where he is at. The swelling problem he was having after therapy has quit for the most part so we are hoping for a release. Still has a lot of healing to go but it is on the mend. Thank you all for your concern it has been lovely!! Contact by email (marye.masterson@gmail.com) with...

Weekend Updates

Image
Saturday we headed off about 7:00 am to Lyfa's retirement home in Joplin. I was so excited and nervous couldn't hardly stand it. But we settled in for the 6 hr drive. Now on the return we brought the mule with us. My friends have tried over the last year to get him to warm up to them but he just wasn't doing it. Mtn Man has a way with mules in that he is patient and slow moving especially when they have attitude issues. On the way we saw some amish folks over by Mansfield bustlin about on their buggies. Was kind of neat to see them. When we arrived over there we were all excited to see each other. Had been 5 yrs since we seen each other. We had some supper and returned to the road to home. This was a longgggg day!! We got home around 11:30pm with Einstein ( the mules new name) and two goats ( momma and her child) and went straight to bed leaving the critters to hang out in the trailer until we let them out the next morning early! Einstein listening...

Garden Work & Rewards

Image
We both worked ourselves silly in the garden but it looks damn good if I do say so myself! We Rock! Before After ******************************************************************************** We are getting a bit of everything out of the garden now. While staking up the tomatoes again I found quite a few ripe tomatoes some are edible while others I threw out.  No peppers yet but did pick our first okra today. Broccoli is still coming on so is the cabbage. No brussel sprouts yet truthfully, not sure we are gonna get any. Something has ate one of my rhubarb plants so now down to two. The blackberry plants I planted are growing well. Lost a raspberry plant, but the grapes is fabulous to have to tie one up today. Canned one quart of carrots & beets yesterday which was all we had in the garden, think I will plant more shortly for fall. Beans are still coming will can them up tomorrow hoping for a full canner. ****************************************...
