Babies everywhere! I love seeing all the babies! The lambs are the other working families babies, snuck a pic! Birthing is an amazing gift from God, this little calf has a 1st time momma and she mothered him like she had done this before......it is a beautiful site! Had to share....more pics to come with more babies on the way! Expecting to get 3-5 inches tonite...bundle up!

Well it looks like our calving season is starting earlier than we planned. We bought some 2 yr old heifers a month ago and on the sale papers it said they were due around Feb 15th, wrong! We had one heifer(900 lbs) give birth to a 92 lb bull calf....it did not survive. We have another that is acting like she may go into labor so are keeping a close eye on her. Our truck driver delivered a new toy for the guys......hay trailer for feeding! This new toy makes their job a whole lot faster! They so appreciate it! Our weather all of a sudden changed to snow and very cold this last week with temps in the single digits and lows below zero with wind chill as low as -28. This weekend it looks like we are gonna see warmer temps into the high 30's with lows in the teens. Our cows and yearlings are much happier with warmer temps! Good Morning! I looked outside this morning and saw a touch of the sunrise peaking thru towards the East, had to take a picture. As it became light, we saw what we were in store for today! Snow blowin sideways and it is CCCCOOOOLLLDDD! I drove the goat over to our freezer and it said 1*. Wind chill is even colder....the weather forecast: " Cloudy with a 40 percent chance of snow. Cold. Snow may be heavy at times. Highs around 13. Temperatures falling into the upper single digits below zero in the afternoon. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Lowest wind chill readings 25 below to 35 below zero in the afternoon."  I understand that there is a bunch of states hit hard by this snow and cold......stay warm, keep the fires burning! Folks today was a cold windy day, so I needed to find something to keep my mind busy. So I decided to work on a quilt. I have had squares cut out on a couple of quilts and decided to work on my lady bug quilt. I love the colors, so bright and cheery! As I was working on this quilt, the Schwan's man showed up unexpectedly which was alright. After getting a few things from him, I decided to throw a big ham in the oven. I didn't have any pineapple that most people traditionally put on their ham. So I threw some peaches on the ham. Now mind you, this is a last minute decision so the ham was very frozen! I turned the oven on 350* threw the dressed ham in about noon and didn't take it out until about 4:30pm. Drenching it about every hour......turned out really yummy! Back to the quilt, I will have to see if I can find a backing that will work with these colors which means searching thru lots of material that I have packed in big garbage bags right at this time. I drive by this tree coming out our 8 mile driveway. As I gaze upon it, leaves me wondering if some little girl had a swing on the lower branch? If maybe this tree had a family sit under it to eat their lunch? If this tree could talk what stories it would have to tell! The antelope have moved in for the winter. They are a bit scared but they sure are pretty, maybe I will get the privilege to see their babies when they are born. I have this old pair of boots that did their job for me. I couldn't just throw them out so like my granny used to do I decided to make fence post ornaments out of them. Granny used to take grandpa's corked logging boots and make planters out of them and they would sit up on the fence posts for all to see. She had lots in the yard! Today I thought we would smoke some deer meat that I had thawed out....we slather it in vinegar/butter mix that gives it that golden look and keeps the meat moist on the inside! It should be yummy! We, hubby and I, finished the fencing for this hay corral. Purpose is to keep the cows out not keep the hay from escaping! My job was to attach the fencing clips to the metal posts, There purpose is to keep the wire in place. With lots of posts and 4 strands of wire I was busy. Then we had to make gates at both ends of this corral. We also installed a water heater today, no not for the house it was for the cattle tank. I hadn't seen anything like this before.....our boss made a barrel into a wood stove. Inside, it has a removable carriage or basket that holds the wood you burn. On the bottom of the basket it has slits that let the ash fall thru to settle to the bottom of the barrel. Attached to the outside of the barrel towards the bottom is an air intake which looks like a very small chimney with a top, that you can adjust. The cover has the chimney for the smoke to escape. When I head to town it seems I come to the same spot that I see an Eagle perched atop a fence post or on top of a lonely tree on the side of the road. When I leave the house I try to remember to bring my camera with me so maybe I can capture this majestic being. Once again, he caught me trying to take his picture....and flew away! Gotcha anyway..... I will keep trying to get his profile picture.......

Today we start branding the new group that has come in the last weeks. This seems to always be an exciting time for all involved. We all know it is hard work, but fulfilling when it is done. This is the time when we can really take a close look at the girls and boys going thru the shoot. Since these are new cows we can record all their information, change their tags to our recording system. For me, as the cook, requires a day preparation to feed all the hungry people after branding. Today I have shredded bbq beef n buns, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, apple/pear crisp, and peach upside down cake. Well better get back at it....people are showing up!
