Hay Feeding Time!!

Image
A familiar scene in the morning. They are hollerin' cuz it is really cold on this mornin'. Their caretaker, ME, needed to hurry up and get them fixed up! The temp was 11 degrees! Our weather has been crazy lately. Temps from the 70's to the teens within a week or two. Crazy. Some of you know what I am talking about with the snow in areas that are having their first snow ever!! Hay and water coming up! M.E. in the shadows yes this farm girl drives a tractor....hay is coming girls and boys P-Nut is here to keep everybody in line When we stick the bales out, we always have to cut the strings. What strings? Well, the bales have continuious strings on them to keep the hay from unraveling. When they are baled up in those funny box looking balers. The hay is packed in wide rows which are then wrapped up into a bale. At the end the strings wrap around the bale ...kind of like wrapping a ball of yarn. We, then, have to cut these strings off so the critters don...

Gettin' Ready

Image
Mtn Man took the day off Friday so, we could get some things done around the farm before the cold weather hits us this next week. We have been very fortunate or not, as of late with warm weather. Last night (thurs.), brought a cold that is affecting my arthritis something terrible! Despite all that, we soldiered on gathering wood. Mtn Man says it will be a 'woody weekend'. Hmmmm We cut off about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I headed for the 'she shack' to work on fixing Lyfa's blanket. The buckle is broken so it has to be replaced. Easy fix!! Thank the lord for that! After gathering and stacking wood my arms can't take much more hard work for today! Well I am off to do a bit more editing on my manuscript. Seems this takes forever.......very anxious for the next step...page design. Until next time........ Copyright © 2017 M.E. Masterson All Photographs Copyright © 2017 M.E. Masterson

We are BACK!!

Image
It has been too long!! I miss writing my blog! Feels good to be back! Did you miss us?? Hugs Hugs Hugs for all! We, bloggers are a different breed of people for sure. Addicted to writing and telling our stories. Over the past year and half  we have made great strides in getting our homestead up and rockin'! Let's do a little catch up: My "She Shack" is a busy, cozy spot for me to go too! I love it! Quilting, Beading and Yarn projects all in one spot! I have a view of the garden from this spot. It is a short walk from our backdoor and close to the outhouse! ha ha We have been reminiscing over the past four years. We have come to realize we have accomplished a ton in such a short period of time. We have built fences, a beautiful screened in porch, got our mill up and running, shop building (includes his leather shop and blacksmith shop) and got our cabin in the back of the big house. A TON!! Here is some pics to catch ya up!! Thanks for...

Happening This Last Week

Image
We have had a busy week! Still going in fact...thought I would take a wee bit of a break to write ya! We started out the week with getting things cleaned up.  #1-Mtn Man and The Kid got the posts in the ground for my grape arbor. Cemented in so they will take a beating! #2- Then they went to work on getting the seat part in the out house. That takes some special doing to keep things in order when you are sittin on the throne. Sitting on it a few times to make sure it will hold some weight and is it wide enough for the big sitters. Steady enough for those who like to hang out a bit. Ya know, some serious contemplating on making sure it is the right size for all who visit! #3- I didn't mention the HEAT has been horrible around these parts!! Heat Index over 100 for days!! #4- Late afternoon yesterday we had a cool front come through.....so so nice!! #5- Today the guys, Mtn Man and Monkey Man, are getting to work on my She Shack! Wahoo!! Monkey Man threw a line in...

Baby Steps Forward

Let me start by saying that this blog started out as a record for my family to follow while living in Montana then turned into a farm record plus keeping others updated in Missouri and now has turned back into the record keeping for our family once again. I am sure as time goes on this blog will have it's ups and downs! Ok so we have got ourselves into another cycle of building. #1- We have been indecisive over horse pasture because our 50 acre lease pasture has had some logging done to it over the summer and there is some pasture left but really needs to be left alone to recoup. So we put out heads together and have decided to fence off our pastures here at the house. We started the post holes.... using what we have right now which is cedar posts. #2- Well is an ongoing process of decisions. Remember back when I said something about building a cabin on the hill out back? We are back to taking the back half of this house and making into a functioning little house. Mtn Man inv...

Shop Wall

Image
Sorry I haven't written in couple days.  I had to look back to see where we left off....the guys were putting the last of the floor board down. Next morning they got themselves organized again and off they went to put up the outside wall. Note to self do not stand behind a wall that a nail gun is being used on! Missed me by inches!!  They got the wrap on in the nick of time! It rained "cats & dogs" within secs of the last staples in the plastic! Will cut out doorway when we are ready for door. Now the other wall needs to be built........ Yesterday we went over to the folks house and helped put in a water softener. While I myself went fishin'! No fish today. With Tator's help of course! Good Morning Folks! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend wherever you are. Here in America the air smelled of BBQ's and Gunpowder! 239 yrs later the Big Boom from the fireworks hasn't gotten old! Hubby and I enjoyed a relaxing weekend....well somewhat relaxing...ha ha. We find working on our farm is relaxing. We worked in the yard and garden yesterday getting it mowed and tilled. Then we BBQ'd a couple pork steaks, baker potatoes and had a salad. It was refreshing after a hard days work! The garden has been producing beans, jalapeno peppers, crooked neck squash, acorn squash and we got our first tomato out of the garden yesterday! It needs to sit for couple days but it is colored! Pulled all the onions... have decided next year to not plant sets probably will try from seed to see if they do better. The sweets did alright but the sets did horrible. In fact the reason I pulled them is because they had green mold on them.... to much rain I suspect. This year the ...
