UPDATES And A BIG Thank you

Image
Let me start with  Broody Hen: On Monday I wrote about my girl and her mood . Much thanks to Chicken Chick and her Brood Breaker, IT WORKED!!! Now this girl had been acting broody for probably a week and half if I really go back and think about it. If allowed these girls will hatch out a batch of eggs brooding for the full 21 days. She didn't need to as I have no rooster. Anyhoo, it took her a little bit longer(72 hrs) than probably most who are caught earlier(24 hrs). But am grateful it worked. Last night she went into the coop and was roosting with the rest. This morning I was greeted by a happy hen. I will now use it(cage) for my young trio that are growing like weeds. Adding a couple temp boards to the bottom of the cage so their little legs don't slip through. Multi uses!! ***************************************************************************** Some of you have been curious about my face! Well it has pretty much healed up. It still has a little bit of sca...

Open Door

Image
We have just enough of a break to open up the front door and let that FRESH air in! Believe me this house needs a bit of fresh air. Let me see if maybe I can paint an image your nose you can smell. When you walk into our house at any given time of the day....you will smell a hint of old house (musty, mildey, mousy, buggy, etc you get the point and if you haven't smelled this before well use your imagination), dog smell (old & young), whatever I have conjured up in the kitchen or is sitting on the wood stove, wood stove smoke, wood (cedar & pine), with a little smell (perfumed kaka most times) of whatever is wafting out of the bathroom (sits right directly next to the kitchen) that has just been used, grain smells from the pantry (this is where the animal feed is stored for the moment) and people funk from being cooped up in the winter time (you know what I mean). This is not to say I am a dirty house keeper...just not the anal one I used to be yearrrrrrssss ago. Our ho...

Hunkerin' Down

It is in the minus temps, -2* so far. Other temps we have heard south of us -18*. Wind chill warnings of awful cold temperatures, -15* plus. Mtn Man will be sticking close to keep the fire fed to keep the house warm, or as warm as one can get in a drafty house . The temp in here, we figure is in the fifties. Yes, we dress for our house. Warm thick socks, slippers (ice cold floors) and long sleeve thick shirts. Wrap up in warm blankets cuz can't do much else but sew projects. Have electric heaters in the bedroom and laundry room to keep things warm. It is working hard to keep them warm...... Not looking for sympathy. I am writing it all down to look back on in the future. Helps with the appreciation scale! Also helps with the memory bank...look back on what we get accomplished! ********************************************************************************************* Beaded another project will attach this to soft leather for a bracelet to sell. Keep warm folks! If you...

For Real

Image
This is before we weeded! We started our day taking a walk in the garden which turned into working in the garden pulling weeds. The fall garden has been weeded. The garden was still a bit to wet to plant more seeds. Hoping that we will be able to use the rototiller today and plant some more beets for my In Laws. Plus we picked about 30-35lbs of tomatoes.... I then went to canning tomatoes and okra, ended up with 12 qts and 12 pts total!  ********************************************************************************* My outdoor kitchen  I entitled this "For Real" because I have read some other blogs who say there are to many blogs who proclaim one thing and show another. Never judge a book by it's cover! Mtn Man and I have lived off grid by choice at our cabin in Montana. We loved our life there and intend on having something similar here.  At the present time, as some of you know already, our house needs to come down and we will build an efficient hou...

Catching Up

We arrived on the 2nd of November still able to enjoy a taste of fall in the south. The leaves changing were in full force and the further south we got the more the change was getting closer to their end. So needless to say, we have been blessed with a long fall this year. The temps are in the 50's/60's and lows in 30's/40's although we have had some teens as lows a few nights but this is still so much nicer than back in Southeast Montana. Our Drive! Trees More Trees.. Did I mention Trees?  In our short time here we have already established a nickname with the locals, "Montana" is our new identity. We go to breakfast most every morning at the local cafe called "Hideaway Cafe" owned by Randy & Linda Smith. Wonderful food and Great People!!! This going to breakfast is a new deal with us but we are without a cooking stove at this moment so I am limited to the micro and crock pot and let's not forget the BBQ Grill ou...
