Hay Feeding Time!!

Image
A familiar scene in the morning. They are hollerin' cuz it is really cold on this mornin'. Their caretaker, ME, needed to hurry up and get them fixed up! The temp was 11 degrees! Our weather has been crazy lately. Temps from the 70's to the teens within a week or two. Crazy. Some of you know what I am talking about with the snow in areas that are having their first snow ever!! Hay and water coming up! M.E. in the shadows yes this farm girl drives a tractor....hay is coming girls and boys P-Nut is here to keep everybody in line When we stick the bales out, we always have to cut the strings. What strings? Well, the bales have continuious strings on them to keep the hay from unraveling. When they are baled up in those funny box looking balers. The hay is packed in wide rows which are then wrapped up into a bale. At the end the strings wrap around the bale ...kind of like wrapping a ball of yarn. We, then, have to cut these strings off so the critters don...

Gettin' Ready

Image
Mtn Man took the day off Friday so, we could get some things done around the farm before the cold weather hits us this next week. We have been very fortunate or not, as of late with warm weather. Last night (thurs.), brought a cold that is affecting my arthritis something terrible! Despite all that, we soldiered on gathering wood. Mtn Man says it will be a 'woody weekend'. Hmmmm We cut off about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I headed for the 'she shack' to work on fixing Lyfa's blanket. The buckle is broken so it has to be replaced. Easy fix!! Thank the lord for that! After gathering and stacking wood my arms can't take much more hard work for today! Well I am off to do a bit more editing on my manuscript. Seems this takes forever.......very anxious for the next step...page design. Until next time........ Copyright © 2017 M.E. Masterson All Photographs Copyright © 2017 M.E. Masterson

Monday Wrap Up!

Image
So I have been a bit distant lately. I apologize was just putting all my energies into other parts of my life. The Jamberry Party I had on FB was a TOTAL SUCCESS!!! Thanks to all of the 80+ attendees!! Yesterday I was called out to look over some horses that are in dire need of care. The woman ended up forfeiting them to me. We are going to do our best to rehabilitate them back to where they should be. Hoping that they will recover to full capacity! These are what they look like as of yesterday.... August 2015 Aug 2015 The thinnest one had a baby in May that died 6 days after it was born. do believe after seeing it's pics it was due to malnutrition. May 2015 May 2015 I have had previous experience with horses like this. Owned a Rescue Horse Ranch years ago. I have started them slowly on a regiment and will continue until they are in healthy condition.  Will keep ya updated!  Ps. I do want to mention A HUGE THANK YOU to our local Feed Store "War...

Horse Lost & Found

Image
2007 Before Her Injury   Sunday night Lyfa my 23 yr old horse decided she needed to see the country. Took a walk up the logging road over the hill to visit the neighbors a few miles away. Now she had a bell around her neck which I would listen for while out in the pasture that are due for fencing. Around 4pm I went out to look for her and she was not where I thought she would be. I didn't panic yet. I got in my FJ and took a drive looking for her. Found her track up the logging road and no Lyfa. Climbed a little bit up the hill and still no Lyfa. I turned the car around because the brush was to thick for the FJ headed back for the house. Made a call to the neighbor to be on the lookout for her maybe she would try to find her way back to the other horses down the way. Well I could not be so fortunate. Called the folks and explained what the situation was. They told me that they would be over the next morning with the buggy to help look for Lyfa.  Now my 4 wheeler is brok...

Farm News

Image
Catching up on the Farm News: Lyfa has adjusted well to her new digs. She free roams, with a bell on, the pastures and when she is done she comes to the front yard to tell me. I take her back to her pen and we start again the next day. It works for both of us. The baby chicks as of last weekend have been officially integrated with the adult hens.  I started out by letting them out during the day to roam in the pen. Then they would come back to their little hut at night to roost. Then for three nights I would grab them from their roost and place them in the hen hut to roost on the side of the hen boxes, roosting bar on the front of it. After three days I shut their hut up to lovingly force them to go to the hen house at night and it worked. Now they live with the big girls. Nobody has been hurt or picked on in the process. They respectfully run when a couple of the "bosses" show up. They are doing great thus far! It has been a two week process. FIL came up yesterday wi...

Alterations Made

Image
Saturday we made the trip over to Joplin to drop off the screamer and her babies. Loaded up Lyfa and headed south to Arkansas. We got a call before we left asking us to come on down to see his sister. We thought we were that close (1 1/2 hrs), why not? It was really nice to see the family. Kids soaked it up. Mtn Man's Mini next to him We also brought Little Man with us on this trip for his new home. He went to Arkansas to a breeder. How fortunate could we have gotten!! I am happy that everything went smoothly. Lyfa is back in a new home (the goat pen modified a little) and I think she likes having a bit of quiet time to herself. She seems content!  We took out the divider in the shed and tied open the doors she could come and go as she pleased.  Even at 23 yrs old she is curious! Came back last evening to rest on our front porch. It was so lovely to hear the quiet once again. Serenity Valley is once again, peaceful! Love hearing from ya!!!!  FOLLOW US...
