Treats For The Chickies

Image
Monday it rained like the dickens in the first half of the day and the second half was blasted hot! My girls were grateful for the shade from the big trees which was a bit cooler. I hopped on the tractor in search for some entertainment for them. I first started in the horse/goat pen. Grabbed up some old hay to lay in the top of the pen so maybe in couple days I can turn it and find bugs. Then I wanted some old logs to place out in their pen so I could turn them in a few days for bugs. Got the idea from another blogger which I can't remember, sorry! then I thought well maybe under some of those old logs would be all kinds of bugs of all sorts and worms. I dug up a half a scoopful and we hit paydirt. The girls love it!! I will continue to find new things to introduce to them to keep things interesting. Because they can't roam or I may not have any chickies left! To many predators in our little valley for loose chickens! Don't they look so happy! See the logs and th...

Baby Chicks Update

Image
I guess you really can't call them babies anymore. They are teenagers now! I was keeping them in a horse trough that we weren't using for anything else. Couldn't find a pic with them in it but you get the idea. When broody hen was done with her facilities I decided to put these little guys in there. I am not sure but I think one of them might just be a rooster!  Curious Girls! For those of you who don't know chickens are finicky critters. They don't do change real well. Adding new chickies to the flock is a little bit hard on their pea brains. They can be a bit moody about it. So in order to introduce new members I thought this would be the most humane for all involved. I will wait until these kids are grown up a bit more before I let them lose! Love hearing from ya!!!! Got Water?

Image
Hope everybody had a wonderful weekend!  Went over and visited with Grandma J yesterday. It is always a joy to see her! Got home and went to spend some time in our shelter. Crazy winds (60 mph) whipped our trees around like they were sticks with flags on them! I haven't ever seen that here! We were under Tornado Watch and Severe Storm Warning. That eventually went by and then another came in last night with strong thunder, lightening and rain! The water is draining out the sides Woke to lots of flooding this morning....   It is good that my chickies have a big pen to roam in....  As in times past the water is flowing down our road.  The work that Mtn Man did on the creek did not hold up. In fact, you really can't even see what he did except on little island. It has washed out ! I was trying to find a pic without my rear in it ...sorry! But can you see in the background the mounds of dirt he banked up to control the flow..... not any more...

UPDATES And A BIG Thank you

Image
Let me start with  Broody Hen: On Monday I wrote about my girl and her mood . Much thanks to Chicken Chick and her Brood Breaker, IT WORKED!!! Now this girl had been acting broody for probably a week and half if I really go back and think about it. If allowed these girls will hatch out a batch of eggs brooding for the full 21 days. She didn't need to as I have no rooster. Anyhoo, it took her a little bit longer(72 hrs) than probably most who are caught earlier(24 hrs). But am grateful it worked. Last night she went into the coop and was roosting with the rest. This morning I was greeted by a happy hen. I will now use it(cage) for my young trio that are growing like weeds. Adding a couple temp boards to the bottom of the cage so their little legs don't slip through. Multi uses!! ***************************************************************************** Some of you have been curious about my face! Well it has pretty much healed up. It still has a little bit of sca...

Breaking The Mood

Image
While I was building I had the radio on listening to Christian speeches and songs. Vince Gill came on singing "High On That Mountain" not sure that is the title. Anyhoo these girls settled right down.... Thank you VG! Let me start by saying I truly love my chickens. When something isn't right in the little flock it shows right away. About a week and half or so ago my girls were trying to tell me that something wasn't right in their coop. I paid attention but couldn't figure it out! I freshened everything up meaning I dusted (bug killer) and cleaned their coop. I put a new larger feed pan in the coop. Opened it up for some freshness. And still was having issues! Each time I noticed a hen who was a bit stand offish. Crabby. Told me that she wasn't wanting me to mess with her. At first I gently lifted her and stole the eggs from under her. Then I noticed she wasn't leaving that nest and I had fewer eggs everyday. She had got in the "mood" to...
